As you guys know, I did the music design for an outstandingly original play in NYC called “The Wendy Complex.” The writer/director, Jeremy Bloom, initially requested my participation because he said while he was penning the script, he had VasoVerga on his iPod continually.
It was such a challenging yet gratifying experience. Ty and I try to create microcosms in our songs as best we can, but I’ve never done music design for a live play; for another story that could be swayed into the right or wrong tone by my sounds. In college I’d done plenty of sound mixing and design, but it’s easier when you have the edited film up on screen, and the ability to pause and retry sound clips over and over.
In this situation, I had the pleasure of sitting in on rehearsals from the get-go. The actors were kind enough to replay a scene every now and again, but for the most part I had to know the story, make sure I comprehended Jeremy’s vision (he’s a genius, btw - quite a prodigy of all aspects of directing) and plug in my best stab at a musical cue as it arrived in rehearsal - for just one try. I used some instrumental versions of VasoVerga tracks, but also revived some snippets of old songs.
The end product was so well received. Very very moving, and the tone of the piece so whimsical and surreal that I went through withdrawal when it was over. I was honored to meet many audience members who wanted to talk about the music.
Then, I heard good news the other day - The Wendy Complex has been accepted into the International Midtown Theater Festival in NYC! This summer, we will have the opportunity to run the show again, in front of a new audience. I’ll keep you posted with the dates.
Also, a BIG thanks to all you Jetsetters who came out to see the show! It means a lot to me, and I hope you were enraptured by the same melancholy bliss that The Wendy Complex infected me with!

Check out Jetsetter on CFOU 89.1 FM on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 7:30 EST. If you’re in the Trois-Rivieres area of Quebec, tune in. Otherwise, you can stream it (when it prompts “Open With…”, choose iTunes).
This is the season finally of the wonderfully produced Rock Revele series, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it! What’s more, Renee’s interviews are EN FRANCAIS for all you francophones.
We’ve been designing the score for an original play, The Wendy Project, which will show in NYC April 3-6. It’s a really refreshing play~ we’d love for you to come down and check it out! It’s the kind of show that’s whimsical to watch, but leaves you thinking for a few days.
There will be 2 performances per night (8pm and 10pm) from April 3 - 6.
SYNOPSIS
From writer/director Jeremy Bloom, “A skydiver prepares to break world records by free fall jumping from just within the ozone. Time: the hours prior to his harrowing leap. Gathered: the press, supporters, dignitaries and his Wife, Wendy. With their eyes on the huge purple sky, they brace themselves like Wendy Darling did before jumping from the window in Peter Pan. A free fall jump is the closest people get to flying, losing any semblance of gravity. This: a happy thought, indeed.”
*Ithaca note: Set designer for The Wendy Project is Ithaca College alumn, Stephanie Tucci!
Renee’s mom, Cindy Dunaway, will have a special radio biography and interview on March 18th, 7:30pm EST, Montreal station CFOU 89.1 FM.
The show will focus on her career as a fashion and rock n’ roll costume designer throughout the decades, and more recently on her entrepreneurial career with her home decor store, Moon Hollow, in Wilton, CT.
Our French ditty (sans the French) will be on the soundtrack of next week’s Gauntlet III (10pm EST, MTV). By now, I’m sure you’re all addicted to the show- it’s captivating! Good ol’ MTV rapid-fire editing.
Catch it online here.
Check out tomorrow night’s episode of Gauntlet III on MTV at 10pm EST to catch a listen to Metropolis in the soundtrack.

Jetsetter is the musical duo of Renee Dunaway and Tyler Finck, whose infectious melodies, trip-hop hooks, euro grooves, pop energy, and candid lyrics compose songs that teeter between fun, sultry and melancholy. They have been compared to Zazie, Junior Senior, Massive Attack and Ani DiFranco.
Their debut album, VasoVerga (2007), has enjoyed international airplay and use on soundtracks for shows on MTV, Oxygen Network and the original NYC play The Wendy Complex.
Music has filled Renée and Tyler’s entire lives. Renée’s parents are rock bassist Dennis Dunaway (original member of Alice Cooper) and rock costume designer Cindy Dunaway (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, The Who). Renee began writing songs in elementary school and took up guitar when she was twelve. Tyler, on the other hand, started with the piano when he was six, and has since added a multitude of instruments to his repertoire that all make their way onto Jetsetter tracks. The duo met at Ithaca College as film students when Renée took note of Tyler’s outstanding compositions for student pieces and promptly stalked him into writing with her.
